Pentecost and its Season
In the
Christian Church year, the Day of Pentecost is the 50th day after
the resurrection of Jesus from the dead. On the very first Pentecost recorded
in the Bible’s book of Acts chapter 2, God sent the Holy Spirit to the
disciples of Jesus. This outpouring of the Holy Spirit made it possible for
the disciples to share the message of Jesus Christ the Savior with the people
from many different countries who had gathered in
Jerusalem. The result was that about 3,000
people believed the message they heard from the disciples, were baptized, and
became followers of Jesus Christ. The Day of Pentecost is rightfully thought
of as the birthday of the Christian Church.
This year
the Day of Pentecost comes on May 24th. On this day we are reminded
that God’s love and salvation are for all people everywhere. The Season of
Pentecost then extends all the way into November. During this time we study
the teachings of Jesus, seek to apply them to our lives, and ask God’s help to
share our faith in word and deed to the ends of the earth.
